New AMA CEO assumes position in a challenging time

The American Medical Association is still a big spender on Capitol Hill, but membership rolls have dropped somewhat. Madara James Madara becomes the new executive vice president and CEO of the American Medical Association July 1, at a time when the groups lobbying spending has surged while membership revenue has fallen. In 2010, the year that saw passage of the Obama administrations health care overhaul, the doctors group spent $22.5 million for lobbying, and had 45 lobbyists (including in-house and hired guns) in their employ, according to the Center for Responsive Politics OpenSecrets.org database.
